What is non invasive paternity testing?

Non invasive paternity testing is the process of determining the father child relationship without the use of physically invasive procedures. A simple draw of blood is all that requires.

Non invasive paternity testing before birth

In recent years the process of determining paternity before birth involved collection samples of the amniotic fluid. This was often done by injecting a needle into the mothers stomach to draw fluid for the amniotic sac. The procedure does involve several risks factors. However, technology has delivered a non invasive alternative to pre birth paternity testing.

Non invasive prenatal paternity DNA testing provides a risk free method of gaining answers before birth. Using this method, no sample is required to be collected from the unborn child. Blood samples are taken from the expecting mother and possible father. Fetal DNA and the mothers DNA make a connection with one another. As a result, the fetal DNA may be found in the mothers blood. Collecting a blood sample from the mother eliminates the need to invasively collect from the unborn child. This avoids large risk factors. The testing is completely safe.

Non invasive paternity testing using mouth swabs

When it comes to collecting DNA samples from a child mouth swabs are often preferred. This method involves taking a long cotton tip and gentle swabbing the inside of the child's mouth. DNA samples are gathered on the cotton swab for later testing. This method is completely painless and less traumatizing to the child. Samples are collected from the alleged father in the same manner. The two samples are then compared to determine paternity.
